Majority of Viewers Not Likely to Purchase Toyota Vehicles after Watching Video
Toyota recall decreases favorability of the brand among viewers

Flemington, NJ, January 29, 2010 – A new media study among 301 viewers of a news clip highlighting the Toyota recall revealed that the majority (56%) indicated that they are not likely to purchase a Toyota vehicle after watching the news clip.

The study was conducted during January 28-29 by HCD Research using its MediaCurves.com® website, to obtain viewers’ perceptions of a news clip discussing the recent recall of certain Toyota models due to a problem with the accelerator pedals. To view detailed results go to: www.mediacurves.com.

The favorability rating of the Toyota brand declined from an average rating of 4.9 to 3.9 on a scale from 1 to 7, after viewing the video. In addition, the percentage of viewers who indicated that they were somewhat likely to purchase a Toyota as their next car dropped from 63% before viewing the video to 44% after viewing the video.

“As evidenced by our automated response curves, Toyota owners and non-owners indicated a drastic negative perception of the brand when the reporter states that ‘the problem is gas pedals that can stick, causing sudden acceleration,’” commented Glenn Kessler, president and CEO, HCD Research.

While viewing the video, participants indicated their levels of perception of the Toyota brand by moving their mouse from left to right on a continuum. The responses were recorded in quarter-second intervals and reported in the form of curves. The participants were also asked to respond to post-viewing questions.

Just wanted to say that my perception of Toyota has changed because of the video simply because the brand has offered no answer. I'm not sure I would feel safe driving around a car that could have a problem like its other models, but there is no real answer to be sure. It would not make me feel safe driving a car i'm paying for.

It really bothers me that they have no fix and no recall on vehicles people currently own.

Many other cars have done this but I would be sure to check things out on this now and this means maybe a lot of used defective cars on the market.

I have a favorable opinion that they are suspending sales and recalling those models htat are effected and not covering things up.

I think it is a positive move to recall the cars but it worries me they haven't found a solution for the problem. Most car makers have had recalls and there will be more in the future. I'm glad car makers will fix the problems when needed and admit the mistake.

It's not as bad as they are making it. If you look at the whole iudtsnry, everybody have problems and recalls. However, the news have been bombarding us with toyota problems. However, toyota car sales have been going through the roof. Now ask yourself, how often do you see or hear people that actually been crashing their toyotas into stores?? The vast majority dont' have problems, and that is why sales are doing well. A crappy toyota is still better than a good american car.

It sounds like Toyota is lost as to what is causing the problem, leaving the consumer in the learch.

Impressed that Toyota is going to stop making certain models until issue s resolved. It shows they are putting safety above making a profit.

The survey was definitely informative. I wondered- but hadn't really looked into what was going on with the Toyota recall... I'm dissatisfied that Toyota hasn't taken a more proactive approach to their supposed "recall". Recalling a vehicle completely and yet telling those who own one to do nothing about it!?! What was their real motive? Not offering to fix or replace the vehicles in question?!?!!! In my opinion the action Toyota has taken is not really that of caring about their customers- but moreover that of using the media to perhaps avoid lawsuit liability. Has this survey discouraged me from EVER buying a Toyota? Not entirely- but it has made me question whether or not I would feel truly comfortable buying one...

I don't feel it's right that Toyota is not giving their customers any real options. I feel everyone who recently got a loan to buy a Toyota should have the option to bring their car back for a full refund or get half of their money back.
