Home Genetic Testing Kits: Not What the Doctor Ordered
Majority of physicians are not likely to recommend home testing kits to patients

Flemington, NJ, May 13, 2010 – Results of a new national media study among 693 physicians revealed that the majority of physicians (71%) reported that it is not appropriate for pharmacies to sell home genetic testing kits.

The study was conducted during May 12-13 by HCD Research using its MediaCurves.com® website, to obtain physicians’ perceptions of a news report that Walgreens pharmacies will sell home genetic testing kits that assess the risk of developing dozens of health conditions, including Alzheimer's disease, breast cancer and heart disease. To view detailed results go to: www.mediacurves.com.

The majority of physicians (59%) also indicated that results from a home genetic test kit would have no impact on their treatment plans for patients. In addition, a clear majority of physicians (80%) reported that they were either “somewhat unlikely” or “extremely unlikely” to recommend the purchase of home genetic testing kits to their patients.

HOME GENETIC TESTING IS NOT FDA APPROVED. IT SHOULD BE OK IN CONJUNCTION WITH MD INPUT.

Positive or equivocal tests at Walgreens are apt to cost a bunch to prove them falsely positive without many true positives that would benefit patients.

the company coming out with the test has an obligation to instruct doctors about the test before they make it available

So these companies are selling these tests for upwards to $300 according to the WSJ today. They make the profit and my patients are going to come into my office demanding that I explain the results to them while I can charge them nothing as it is not reimpursable. Thanks for another unfunded mandate.

FDA is investigating this 'kit' as a 'medical device" Manufacturer's quality assurance, sensitivity and specificity need to be verified before I would recommend the kit. Anything proven by the evidence based literature that brings a patient in for further screening and preventive care has its advantages !

Yet another example of untrained people trying to make a buck from an unsuspecting public. As PT Barnum is reputed to have said, "There's one born every minute, and two to take his money."
