Americans Say Slap NHL Player with Criminal Charges for Stick to the Face

Flemington, NJ, March 12, 2007 — A national focus group conducted among 301 Americans revealed that a majority (57%) believe that a NY Islanders hockey player should face criminal charges for hitting an opponent in the face with his stick.

The study was conducted by mediacurves.com, a service of HCD Research during March 10-12, to obtain Americans’ reactions to a video clip in which Chris Simon is shown hitting Ryan Hollweg of the NY Rangers in the face with his stick during a game on Thursday night.

Among the findings:

  • More than half (57%) reported that Simon should face criminal charges for hitting Hollweg in the face with his stick, while 43% indicated that Simon should not face criminal changes.
  • A clear majority (58%), indicated that Simon should be fined and temporarily suspended for striking another player in the face, while more than one quarter (27%), indicated that he should be permanently suspended for his actions.
