Americans Say Catholic Church Must Step-Up Efforts to Curb Sexual Abuse

Majority Believes Sexual Abuse Would Decrease if Priests Were Permitted to Marry

Flemington, NJ, July 17, 2007 – Results from a national focus group of 429 Americans indicated that a majority of all responders (68%) reported that they do not think the Catholic Church is doing enough in response to sexual abuse.

The study was conducted by HCD Research, using its mediacurves.com web site, during July 16-17, to obtain Americans’ views on an apology issued by Cardinal Roger Mahoney to sexual abuse victims following the largest settlement in the history of the Catholic Church.

While viewing video segments of the Cardinal’s press conference, participants were asked to indicate the Cardinal’s level of sincerity by moving their mouse from left to right on a continuum. The responses were recorded in quarter-second intervals and reported in the form of curves. The curves indicated that while Catholics perceived the Cardinal’s apology to be sincere, non-Catholics perceived that the Cardinal’s apology was insincere. Participants were also asked pre- and post-viewing questions.

Study participants included a national sample of self-reported Catholics, Protestants and other religious groups. To view sincerity curves and detailed results among religious affiliation, go to: www.mediacurves.com

Among the study findings:

  • Prior to viewing segments of the press conference, among all responders, 68% reported that the Catholic Church is not doing enough to respond to sexual abuse, compared to 63% of Catholics, 70% of Protestants and 71% of other religious groups.
  • The Cardinal’s apology had little effect on all groups. After viewing segments of the press conference, among all responders, 66% reported that the Catholic Church is not doing enough in response to sexual abuse, compared to 57% of Catholics, 68% of Protestants and 72% of other religious groups.
  • More than half of all responders (53%) reported that sexual abuse would decrease if Catholic priests were permitted to get married. Among religious affiliation, 49% of Catholics reported that sexual abuse would decrease, compared to 51% of Protestants and 58% of other religious groups.

The Media Curves web site provides the media and general public with a venue to view Americans’ perceptions of popular and controversial media events and advertisements.

Although well-hidden for many years, I am amazed how unaware and unconvinced people are to the sexual abuse problems within the Catholic Church. The results shown in the graphs seem to indicate that people would prefer not to deal with the problem itself, but only with those priests who have gotten away with abuse for years. Punishment after the fact may only serve to further the secrecy within the Church. An apology is only a bandaid on these heinous crimes and these priests should be treated the same as anyone else in society who would dare prey on children. This issue needs to be investigated more thoroughly and harsh punishments should be handed out not only to the actual abusers but to those who have aided and abetted as well. The Church officials are also guilty of enabling by doing nothing more than relocating the priests who show an abusive tendency. I'm pleased that your online survey with the video reached so many and only hope it enlightened some who may not have been aware as they should be. Unless society takes a stand that this type behavior will not be tolerated, I don't see the Church changing its policies nor the lawmakers pursuing the guilty.

How does Catholic church stop sexual abuse when our own law enforcement agencies cannot.

I agree that the Catholic church should be doing more to uncover sexual abuse in the church. I'm glad that priest apologized, but the church still has a long way to go to root out the abuse. In my opinion, it is not normal for any male or female to live a celibate life. If priests were allowed to get married, I'm sure this abuse would have been and will continue to be a lot less.

A prayer would have been nice; something more than rewind or an apology is needed. Pete

It is a shame that this has happened; but with our awareness it should slow down now. Or possibly even stop. People are more aware and children now know not to do everythiing you are told. And it is safe to tell Mom and Dad what is going on in their lives.
