Flemington, NJ, December 16, 2009 – A new media study among 301 viewers of a an interview with President Barack Obama revealed that nearly half of the viewers (49%) reported that the U.S. should decrease troop involvement in Afghanistan after viewing the video.
The study was conducted by HCD Research using its MediaCurves.com® website on December 14-15, to obtain viewers’ perceptions of an interview with President Barack Obama in which he discusses U.S. military involvement in Afghanistan. To view agreement curves and detailed results go to: www.mediacurves.com.
“Agreement levels typically declined for Republicans and rose for Democrats throughout the video. The one point at which the agreement level declined for Democrats occurred when President Obama stated, ‘there are, I think, elements in Afghanistan who would be perfectly satisfied to make Afghanistan a permanent protectorate of the United States,’” explained Glenn Kessler, president and CEO, HCD Research.
No significant changes in viewers’ perceptions were revealed before or after they watched the video. After viewing the video, 25% of viewers agreed with the decision to begin withdrawing troops from Afghanistan in the summer of 2011, while 45% of viewers reported that troops should be withdrawn earlier, and 31% of viewers indicated that troops should be withdrawn later than the summer of 2011.
