Flemington, NJ, December 4, 2008 – A new national study among 300 viewers of a news clip explaining the charges and suspension of Plaxico Burress of the New York Giants revealed that the majority (75%) of those studied feel that Burress should be tried and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law (a mandatory minimum of 3 ½ years in prison) on his charges of illegal gun possession.
The study was conducted by HCD Research from December 3-4 to obtain Americans’ perceptions of the New York Giants’ receiver Plaxico Burress’ arrest and charges of illegal gun possession.
Most viewers believe that Burress is not being victimized by the legal system because of his celebrity status. In addition, the majority agree that Burress is being treated as an average citizen in this case.
Among the findings:
“Do you think that Burress should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law?
(If convicted, Burress would serve a mandatory minimum of 3 ½ years in prison)”

While viewing the video clip, participants indicated their levels of agreeability by moving their mouse from left to right on a continuum. The responses were recorded in quarter-second intervals and reported in the form of curves. The participants were also post-viewing questions.
The Media Curves web site provides the media and general public with a venue to view Americans’ perceptions of popular and controversial media events and advertisements.
