Political Parties Say Obama's Speech Will Not Put Pastor's Racial Comments to Rest

Barack Obama's Race Speech

Flemington, NJ, March 18, 2008 – A new national study among 709 self-reported Democrats, Republicans and independents, indicated that the majority of all political parties do not believe that Senator Obama’s speech will put to rest racial comments made by his former pastor.

The study was conducted by HCD Research earlier today to obtain Americans’ perceptions of video segments of a speech by Barack Obama to address racially charged comments made by his former pastor, Jeremiah Wright and the racial divide in America.

While viewing segments of the speech, participants indicated their levels of agreement by moving their mouse from left to right on a continuum. The responses were recorded in quarter-second intervals and reported in the form of curves. Participants were also asked pre- and post-viewing questions regarding their support for Barack Obama. To view detailed results and agreement curves, go to: www.mediacurves.com

Among the study findings:

Do you think Barack Obama’s speech put the issue surrounding Jeremiah Wright’s racial comments to rest?

  Democrats Republicans Independents
Yes 30% 17% 29%
No 56% 73% 58%
Don’t know 15% 10% 13%

Do you believe Barack Obama when he said he has never heard his former pastor make racial comments about white people or other ethnic groups during the 20 years that he has known Jeremiah Wright?

  Democrats Republicans Independents
Yes 36% 16% 25%
No 48% 68% 53%
Don’t know 17% 15% 22%

I believe Barack Obama. It puts him in a precarious position. The views expressed by his pastor don't neccessarily reflect his. I don't agree with every single thing my pastor says either. But I still like him. I still value him as a person. I thought Senator Obama handled that very well. I am not of Senator Obama's party nor will I probably vote for him. But I do think he handled this situation with Grace and Dignity and I commend him for it.

I believe Mr. Obama. People must remember that the views of his pastor are just that, the pastor's views. I truly liked and appreciated Mr. Obama's speech. He is an exceptionally graceful individual even when under pressure. He cannot be held accountable for what comes from the pastor's mouth.

I believe that Obama is going to have to come up with some mightly excellent spin to give the US voters very good reasons why he maintained a membership for 20 years with the church headed by this preacher. I know politics is messy for all candidates and they certainly expect a number of problematic issues, however, from one's own minister? It's going to take a huge box of new blue Cheer to clean up this mess.

I think it should put it to rest. You can't control what other people say.

I am impressed. He handled that well and ended on a very positive note. We need to find jobs for every american, and stop exporting jobs outside of North America.

Obama's speech did not put Pastor Wright's sermons to rest. This is not the way all black pastor's preach. If it had been one sentence, maybe it would be excusable. BUT, they were many sentences with in many of his sermons that are just NOT excuseable !!! Obama may have thought that this church was a way to the White House, I don't think so. I even think less of Oprah knowing that she was a member for a few years. From what I have heard she does not attend services there any longer. I don't think anything that Obama's says will recoup his credibility with most of us. The one thing he has going for him is that he is a man and black, they will not be so harsh on him. IF this had been Hillary SHE would have been crucified, the news media & news papers would still be talking about it. I am very disappointed in the way she is being treated by the press, unfair to the max !! It should be very interesting to see how this all plays out. I just hope this doesn't cause McCain to win, can't take a 3rd term of bush. May the best women win !!

So upset over that debate last night. Hillary won in a land slide and all the news media and the Philadelphia Inquirer had to side with the baby and fault Hillary for being too hard on him. Night Line last night used all the personal remarks that were asked of each of them, blew them up and never showed any question and answers regarding issues. They never did say that it was Charlie Gibson's fault for asking those questions. Hillary is wrong if she answers the questions and I'm sure it would be worse if she refused to answer. Obama is going to get the nomination and McCain will win the presidency. WE WILL HAVE TO SUFFER WITH 4 MORE YEARS OF bush policies. THANKS !
