Democrats Less Likely to Support Obama after Viewing Pastor's Sermons

Barack Obama's Pastor Jeremiah A. Wright
Majority Believe Obama's Religious Ties will Hurt Campaign Efforts

Flemington, NJ, March 17, 2008 – According to a new national study among 798 self-reported Democrats, Republicans and independents, the majority across all parties indicated that they are “less likely” to support Senator Obama after viewing segments of his former pastor’s sermons.

The study was conducted by HCD Research earlier today, to obtain Americans’ perceptions of video segments of sermons given by Jeremiah Wright, Barack Obama’s former pastor, in which he makes racially charged comments directed toward Hillary Clinton and other statements denouncing the United States as racist.

While viewing segments of the video, participants indicated their levels of agreement by moving their mouse from left to right on a continuum. The responses were recorded in quarter-second intervals and reported in the form of curves. Participants were asked pre- and post-viewing questions regarding their support for Barack Obama. To view detailed results and agreement curves, go to: www.mediacurves.com

Among the study findings:

After viewing the video, are you more likely or less likely to support Senator Barack Obama?

  Democrats Republicans Independents
More likely 19% 7% 18%
Less likely 52% 71% 54%
Don’t know 28% 22% 29%

Do you think Barack Obama’s religious ties to Jeremiah Wright will help or hurt his campaign efforts?

Prior to viewing the video segments:

  Democrats Republicans Independents
Help 6% 2% 5%
Hurt 64% 71% 65%
Don’t Know 30% 27% 30%

After viewing the video segments:

  Democrats Republicans Independents
Help 7 % 6% 9%
Hurt 77% 84% 78%
Don’t Know 16% 10% 14%

The Media Curves web site provides the media and general public with a venue to view Americans’ perceptions of popular and controversial media events and advertisements.

I am a white female republican, and I watched the video of the reverend, I also watched Obama make his speech after it. When I first saw the reverend, I was appalled, but after watching Obama, I understood why he said these things. I still think Obama is the best candidate to be our next President. Alot of people are afraid of change, but the way this country is today, we are in desperate need of change, and I believe Obama can achieve this as our president. We not only need change for us, but for future generations. I also don't believe that Obama can be held responsible for anyone's comments. But now maybe some good will come out of all this.

Let's not forget freedom of religion. A person should be judged by their actions, not who they associate with or who's in their family. I really don't care about this association with the pastor of Obama's church. I care only about what Obama's interest or participation in the pastor's words (in or out of context).

I agree with some of the statements that the pastor is making.

Reverand Wright's comments are despicable, disgusting and devisive. By continuing his relationship with this pastor and making excuses for him Senator O'bama seems to give legitimacy to his point of view despite verbalizing his disagreement.

They may think twice about supporting Obama, as people are tired of racism and/or reverse discrimination. Why was Obama at this church in the first place, and why did he continue to attend there? The whole thing makes people uncomfortable.

He started off pretty well with directly observed effects of racism, but he left out the parts about crime. When I was a boy, avoidance of blacks was a racial discrimination issue. Today, avoidance of blacks is a response to the ongoing horrible effects of ghetto crime that leads to massive fear. When I was looking up the barrell of the robbers pistol and seeing the tips of the bullets shining in the cylinders of his revolver. When I was being patted down while his partner was trying to get my wallet from my pocket, the faces behind which I can still remember 25 years later were both black. The face which I can still visualize was a thin, sharp nosed, 25 year old black man of medium build, well dressed, proper, better dressed than most of my customers. His unarmed assistant was dressed and appeared like most customers but the gun holder looked more like our manager, only shorter. The Pimps in our town are black. The prostitutes come in all colors. The people who robbed our taxicabs were all black. The young black man who shot my closest taxi driving friend was black. I did not grow up to be a racist and was shocked on my first trip to Missouri, meeting the KKK on Hwy 66. I was appalled by the Chicago Blackstone Rangers who wrapped a drill Sgt in wire and set him on fire with lighter fluid. My manager hired a well dressed extremely talented blackman who was a better salesman than I would ever dream of being, but he was such a careless thief and embezzler that I watched him steal from the till. I told my District Manager and when he indicated that he would do nothing, I quit. When I moved to the Ghetto, I was burglarized within 2 weeks. I immigrated to the US in the early 60's, and was discriminated against for years, at first for being foreign, and then for being white. The preacher sounded just like the rest of the black racists who punished me.

i think it will hurt obama his pastor should never had said that it makes the United States residents think that if obama get to be the president their will be racial and other things happening to the white people.right now i think we have a major problems going on in the president elections and the runners need to be thinking about us and what we are looking for in running for the president instead of putting each other down.

The problem with most Americans are they are followers not leaders. You cannot make judgement on a person after a 30 second sound bite. You would have to watch multiple sermons to determine what the pastor is really about and what he's preaching. Until that happens it's a complete media smear campaign to draw out the worst in a man. Please know this man has been in the presence of Bill Clinton so how bad could he really be as a person. WAKE UP AMERICA, pay attention to what is really being feed to your mind.

Any man who attends and counts the Rev. Wright as his "mentor" is NOT a good man for President of all people! His minister preaches HATE and BIGOTRY which is NOT the AMERICAN WAY! I am totally disgusted by this minister's rhetoric! I can understand being angry but with the crimes and drop outs of Black youth and the parents NOT enforcing values and schooling to today's young Black students then they should put the blame where it belongs! Slavery is over 150 years over! PAST DONE---look and plan for the future!

I don't think that Obama's Pastor's remarks will hurt him winning the election at all. The Democratic Party will overlook this situation.

After viewing this so called sermon I should hope no person in their right mind would vote for Obama. This proves that racist still exists. Only this time who is being racist? I think the pastor made it loud and clear that he is racist .

I believe that just because Obama's pastor made a racial slur, means that Obama feels the same way. Is this crazy or what? Now all policitical figures are going to be judged by what others say and do. Unless it is a family member or a real close friend, it isnt his fault, or makes him less of a man because his minister feels a certain way, or said something very wrong. Lets wake up and focus on real issues and real problems. The American public and media should be ashamed of themselves!
