Americans Favor Giuliani over McCain to Represent Party in 2008 Election

Flemington, NJ, June 7, 2007 – The results of a national focus group among 396 self-reported Republicans and independents indicated that among all responders, 44% believe that Rudolph Giuliani will receive the Republican Party nomination for the 2008 election.

The communications research study was conducted by HCD Research, using its mediacurves.com website, during June 6-7, to obtain Americans’ views of candidates after viewing segments from the Republican debate on June 4.

While viewing video segments of the debate, participants indicated their levels of agreement by moving their mouse from left to right on a continuum. The responses are recorded in quarter-second intervals and reported in the form of curves. To view agreement curves and detailed results among party affiliation, go to: www.mediacurves.com

Participants were asked pre- and post-viewing questions regarding their opinions of the candidates.

Among the study findings:

  • After viewing segments from the debate, among all responders, 44% reported that Mr. Giuliani is the most likely candidate to receive the party nomination, compared to Senator John McCain (21%) and Governor Mitt Romney (14%).
  • Among Republicans and independents, 45% of Republicans and 43% of independents indicated that Mr. Giuliani was the most likely candidate to receive the nomination, compared to Senator McCain, 22% of Republicans and 20% of independents and Governor Romney, 14% of Republicans and 13% of independents.
  • Among all responders, 38% reported that Mr. Giuliani would best represent the Republican Party for the 2008 election, compared to Senator McCain (20%) and Governor Romney (15%).
