Viewers Perceive Media Coverage of Tiger Woods as Excessive Even Compared to Michael Jackson's Death

National issues are most engaging topics for media coverage

Flemington, NJ, April 13, 2010 – A new media study among 1,061 Americans revealed that the majority of responders (80%) indicated that there has been too much media coverage regarding the topic of Tiger Woods’ extramarital affairs.

The study was conducted during April 9-13 by HCD Research using its MediaCurves.com® website, to obtain viewers’ perceptions of media coverage of various news events in the past decade. To view detailed results go to: www.mediacurves.com.

The number of viewers who rated Tiger Woods’ media coverage as excessive (80%) exceeded the number of viewers who reported that there was too much media coverage of Michael Jackson’s death (65%). National issues were rated as most engaging by respondents, with 88% indicating that they were “extremely engaged” or  “engaged” in the topic of the September 11th attacks, and 81% indicating that they were “extremely engaged” or  “engaged” in the topic of the U.S. economic recession.

According to Glenn Kessler, president and CEO, HCD Research, the media coverage surrounding Tiger Woods has been excessive. “Tiger Woods’ coverage has set a new standard for over-covering a story,” commented Kessler.

I feel there is too much coverage of celebrities and not enough spent on IMPORTANT events. When something like tiger & mj happens other things get pushed aside. I really get VERY tired of hearing about it.

It seems to me we always focus more on things that happen outside of our country, if we focus more on what goes on in our country, we may not have had a recession.

I think that Tiger Woods owes us no information. It is his and his wife's private affair. The women coming forward are too encouraged by the press and end up looking foolish. Michael Jackson was too young to die, but there also a lot of stuff came out that we really did not need to know. I am no longer watching much TV.

I feel this survey is neccesary because there is not enough media coverage on certain events while there is too much media coverage on other events.

I would like to see the mainstream media covering the news in an unbiased manner. I am sickened by the liberal leftist coverage and its demonizing of anyone who disagrees.

Personal issues should stay personal. The general media needs to be much less biased. It is clear there is a lack of unbiased information.
