Viewers Split on Whether Confederate History Month is Appropriate

Confederate History Month
Republicans say Confederate history should be honored, Democrats disagree

Flemington, NJ, April 12, 2010 – Results from a national media study among 600 Americans viewing a news clip regarding a decision to reinstate Confederate History Month revealed that viewers were evenly spilt, with half reporting that it is “extremely appropriate” or “appropriate” and half indicating that it is “extremely inappropriate” or “inappropriate” after viewing the video.

The study was conducted by HCD Research on April 7-12, using its MediaCurves.com® website, to obtain viewers’ perceptions of a video featuring Virginia Governor Robert McDonnell’s decision to reinstate April as the official month to honor Confederate History. To view detailed results go to: www.mediacurves.com.

Among political parties, the majority of Republicans (62%) indicated that confederate history should be honored, while the same proportion of Democrats (62%) reported that confederate history should not be honored.  In addition, nearly half of the respondents (48%) reported that celebrating Confederate History Month promotes racist ideals after viewing the video.

that man is SCUM... I am committed to not entering the State of Virginia for any reason while he is the governor there, nor of buying anything in/from the place. The concept is out of date, totally inappropriate, disgusting and abominable. And I'm white with Southern origins, so I can only barely imagine where black Americans are with this new spew of hatred.

I think we need to study history. More importantly, it should be accurate history, not sliced off or slanted. State the facts. Then discuss the pros and cons in class. Mistakes were made by historical figures. Slavery is wrong. But kids need to learn where they came from Don't try to hide or misrepresent the facts. LIke the government in Washington hides what they're trying to do.. People who pay the bills (tax payers) don't like being beaten down by those who benefit from those payments.(Washintgon officials)

I am not against a confederate history month per se. It is part of America. The way the Governor of Virginia wants to honor it. In my opinion my excluding the mention of slavery is akin to neglecting to mention the Holocaust while discussing World War 2.

I think if you have a month for any cause or whatever. If you can have a black history month why can't e have a white history. Everyone now a days are too sensitive! God know we can have a month for everyone except white. The civil war happened reguardless of who won. History is history good or bad needs to be remembered and not rewritten.

I feel that the Confederacy was a part of our history, win or lose. I think that states rights was a strong issue in the war. The people in the Confederacy had different views, and it definitely was a part of our history. We should honor the slaves also for their bravery. We could have another month honoring them. They, too, were a part of our history. I think that today the Confederate flag represents racism to many of us, and it is often displayed with racist views, but it once was the flag of the Confederacy which was indeed part of our American history. The Confederacy no longer exists, so I think that the flag should only be a part of that history and no longer a symbol.

I wish people would realize that the Civil War was fought over many things, not just slavery. It is a part of this country's history and just sweeping it under the rug, doesn't mean that it never happened. It should be something that we all learn from.

Whatever people think of this issue, men who fought were doing what they were told to do. Like in any war, people don't always have a choice. These soldiers should be honored for giving up their lives. It is not a racial issue, in my opinion.

The issues of the Civil War are not black & white, literally they rest in a grey area. I am from Alabama, would have been radically opposed to slavery, but so were many Confederates.

I do not necessarily agree with a "Confederate History Month", but I do not feel it is any less appropriate than "Black History Month". I do feel that the Confederate States are an important part of history and know very well that there are more positive than negative aspects to focus on. To say that the Confederacy is all about slavery is like saying that all African-Americans like chitterlings; people simply choose to stereo-type anyone who recognizes the good things about the confederacy as racists.

I feel the civil war was about so much more than just slavery, if there was a month to honor he civil war and the people who died on both sides of the line I would not be against it.

There were blacks fighting along with the whites on both sides of the Civil War. It was more about tariffs than slavery. Sad that we feel we must change history to reflect issues that for the most part had been resolved. It is a part of our history and needs to be studied not changed.

United We Stand should never be spoken as words of unity and equality in the United States of America. The United States of America is the most racially divided country in the world, and it will remain that way until the end of time.

just as we have black history month and every other something for each month it seems, why do we have to hide part of history because one culture in America disagrees with it. I have nothing against black history, but if we have to honor them just cause of their color, why not honor those who fought on either side of a war that is part of history.

Although history shows that the Union won the Civil War, this was one war that was a loss all the way around. Everyone was a hero and no one was a hero because this war should not have happened. There's something very wrong when you have to die for your country because you're being shot at by your country, while you're trying to defend your country. I'd say it would be better to honor all with a Civil War History month instead of just the Confederates month but that might open the doors to even more problems down the road.

i am from the south and i can see how this is an issue, but i believe if it was just taught as a historical event in time, a war, a part of american history and not any praise for the south for doing this, then i believe it is completely appropriate
