Viewers indicated that Chris Matthews' comments on Obama were not appropriate

Flemington, NJ, January 19, 2010 – A new media study among 301 viewers of two videos about Chris Matthews claiming that he “forgot” that President Obama is black revealed that majority of viewers (62%) reported that thought his comment was not racist.

The study was conducted during January 29- February 1 by HCD Research using its MediaCurves.com® website, to obtain viewers’ perceptions of Chris Matthews’ statement that he made after viewing President Obama’s State of the Union address, “I forgot he was black.” The first video was of Matthews’ initial statement and the second video by the Associated Press was about the reactions to his statement. To view detailed results go to: www.mediacurves.com.

More than half of the viewers (57%) indicated that they thought Chris Matthews’ comments were not appropriate after viewing both videos. In addition, approximately one-third of viewers (33%) reported that the incident had a negative impact on their perception of Chris Matthews.

“Although many viewers indicated that they felt Matthews’ comments were not appropriate, our automated response curves revealed that viewers’ agreement levels rose when Matthews stated that he forgot President Obama is black,” commented Glenn Kessler, president and CEO, HCD Research.

We are all too touchy about race. This is the first black president and everyone is so afraid to even admit that he is black. It isn't a secret and there are more things to worry about that what some journalist quips.

I personally do not like Obama but not because he is black, I just don't like his politics. Chris Matthews could have made his whole commentary without the remarks about Obama being black or the need to forget. His (Obamas) race has nothing to do with being president - cut Obama and cut Bush - they both bleed red. The old racist history coming from all colors is what needs to be forgotten so all races in America can move forward as a united front.

I understand what Chris Matthews meant. It wasn't a racist statement as much as it was a glimpse into the head of a non-minority. He said outloud what he was thinking and probably shouldn't have.

AS A MOYER THIS PRESIDENT WAS TO MAKE HISTORY,WE ARE ALL PEOPLE,WHEN WE WORK AT SCHOOL SITE,THEY ARE KIDS,NOT WHITE,BLACK ASIAN AND HISPANIC. I VOTED FOR OBAMA BECAUSE THE WAY I WAS RAISED MANY WERE TAUGHT THAT BEING BLACK OR HAVING BLACK FRIENDS WAS WRONG. FOR ME,IT WASNT THEREFORE THE NAME CHANGE TO MOYER I WANTED TO REPRESENT THE CULTURES THAT I WANTED,TO ELECT A PRESIDENT NOT BASED ON COLOR OR CULTURAL WAYS

We are so quick to add labels to prominent people, i.e. Chris Matthews - racist. Although I see his comments as inappropriate, I also see his transparency in his views when he admits he "forgot" the color of the Presiden't s skin. It does not necessarily mean he is prejudiced against blacks.

I like Chris Matthews, and I watched his show. He really did not mean to be rude with his comments. He was just saying how great a country we have to have a Black person as President and this could not have been done years ago without all hell breaking loose.

It looks like the "race card" will often be played during this presidency by any side looking to benefit from it, like it or not.

Why is it seen as racist if a commentator feels that we are moving past black and white and looking at the content of the message from the President as coming from a MAN, not a BLACK MAN. It needs to be said!
