Viewers Overwhelmingly Approve Amount of Media Coverage Haiti is Receiving

Stark contrast to the majority that reported coverage of Jackson's death was excessive

Flemington, NJ, January 20, 2010 – A new media study among 1,000 Americans revealed that the majority of viewers (71%) indicated that the amount of media coverage of the earthquakes in Haiti is appropriate.

The recent study was conducted during January 19-20 by HCD Research using its MediaCurves.com® website, to obtain viewers’ perceptions of media coverage of various news events in the past decade and was similar to a study conducted in July 2009. To view detailed results go to: www.mediacurves.com.

The majority of viewers (78%) indicated that they think there was too much media coverage of Michael Jackson’s death, which is a greater percentage of viewers than a study conducted in July, in which 63% of viewers indicated that there had been too much media coverage of his death.

According to Glenn Kessler, president and CEO, HCD Research, the media coverage surrounding Michael Jackson’s death was excessive. “The media coverage was over the top and as a result, the over coverage became the salient story for many viewers. The stark difference in viewers’ perceptions of the Jackson coverage and other major news events suggests that there may be a limit regarding news and entertainment strategies,” commented Kessler.

In addition, viewers generally indicated that they were more engaged with national issues than international issues.

I FELT THE MEDIA CAN GO OVERBOARD WITH THEIR COVERAGE OF CERTAIN EVENTS--DIFFERENT MEDIA RADIO, INTERNET, TV COVERING THE SAME SAME STORY WITH JUST ABOUT THE SAME THINGS BEING SAID --IT'S OVERKILL.

Interesing survey, my only comment would be that often coverage of a tragedy is important to those involved as part of ahealing process where as other times coverage only is for the purpose of informing people with the facts. the target audience is different in each instance and coverage should be based on this.

I think Hatti has been over exagerated, because of how inempt the coverage was for Katrina.

it is so hard to say what is too much as far as media coverage but the line for me is when I am eating dinner and they are showing dead people on tv. Some things we dont need pictures of to know how horrible things are. Michael Jackson was one person and even that is questionable. How can we have news all day and night even weeks after his death. That I dont get

It's not always that there is too much media coverage, just not meaningful coverage.

Entertainers and public figures get far too much media exposure while events of real importance are generally under reported. This is one reason why Americans are more ignorant of world events and history.

Media goes way overboard with everything until you're tired of hearing about it and lose interest (if you were interested in the first place) - growing up we had a saying "Open your mouth and let your belly rumble" reminds me of the media - got to keep talking about the same subject even if we are talking nonsense or saying the same as everyone else.

With regards to the earthquake in Haiti, I think the US should do an air lift to get all the children out of that country as quickly as possible. I am sure there are hundreds of households that would take these children until suitable homes could be found for them. Me included..

This does nothing to cover how biased the media is in rushing a biased anti-Obama agenda that covers over the many troubles inherited from the Republican 8 years leading this country.

It's important that we know what is happening all over the world and to contribute to help however we can. The media does play it to death though and you end up turning on a movie instead of the watching the same thing over and over.
