WHO Declares H1N1 Flu Pandemic; U.S. Docs Report Risk is Low for Pandemic

World Health Organization declares first flu pandemic in 41 years, yet U.S. physicians report risk of H1N1 spread is decreasing

Flemington, NJ, June 12, 2009 – Yesterday, the World Health Organization declared the H1N1 flu as the first pandemic of the 21st century. While WHO believes the spread of the H1N1 flu is escalating globally, a recent study revealed that U.S. physicians reported that the virus is becoming less of a risk.

The study was conducted by HCD Research and the Muhlenberg College Institute of Public Opinion (MCIPO) on June 9, to obtain physicians’ perceptions of the H1N1 virus and the potential risk for a catastrophic pandemic. The two organizations have conducted a series of weekly studies on the H1N1 virus to measure physicians’ personal and professional perceptions.

Among the findings:

Please indicate the level of risk that the H1N1 swine flu could result in a catastrophic pandemic. Use a scale from 1 to 7, where 1 indicates "No Risk" and 7 indicates "Extremely High Risk."
