Majority of Americans Will Continue to Purchase Mattel Toys after Recall

Chairman's Comments have Positive Effect among Consumers

Flemington, NJ, August 21, 2007 – Results of a national study conducted among 301 Americans revealed that the majority (76%) reported that they will continue to purchase Mattel products in the future even after the massive toy recall.

The communications research study was conducted by HCD Research, during August 20-21, to obtain Americans’ views of video comments made by Bob Eckert, Chairman & Chief Executive Officer of Mattel, Inc, on August 14.  His comments were made in response to the company’s recall of about 9 million Chinese-made toys that may contain lead paint and magnets children can swallow.

While viewing the video, participants indicated their levels of believability by moving their mouse from left to right on a continuum. The responses were recorded in quarter-second intervals and reported in the form of curves. Participants were asked pre- and post-viewing questions.

Among the study findings:

  • Prior to viewing the video comments made by Mr. Eckert, 71% of all responders reported that they would continue to purchase Mattel products in the future. After viewing Mr. Eckert’s comments there was a slight increase, with 76% of responders indicating that they would continue to purchase Mattel products in the future.
  • Prior to viewing Mr. Eckert’s comments, 75% of all responders indicated that they would trust Mattel to take significant actions to ensure the safety of toys sold in U.S. stores in the future. After viewing his comments, 84% of all responders reported that they would trust Mattel to take significant actions to ensure the safety of toys sold in U.S. stores in the future.

i also will continue to trust and buy Mattel toys. I had JUST purchased quite a few toys just days before the recall for my 1 1/2 yr old grandson...& i feel they are still safe, only dangerous to kids that would actually chew on the toys everyday for quite awhile to get alot of this in thier system to be harmful.

i think they're freaking out and should leave china alone, its not all of china that's doing it, just the government needs to step up and start making sure the stuff's safe and all

Mattel Chairman's response were sincere towards expressing his concerns towards the safety of children, although his actions afterwards warrants second thoughts ,since most shall conclude that China is to blame, but when corporations transgress continents, its past moral obligations are not as well received. Lead paint is harmful for children, and one must realize that whom manufactures the toys possibly does not paint the toys. I favor for those whom made the toys towards safety in general, but must disagree that Mattel has created their own conclusions based upon shareholders, marketshare and good old greed, and you truly think that Chinese worker within their own economical society is not having issues paying their bills too? My thoughts are that the upcoming holiday season will see a massive dump of Mattel value, and crowds running to locate domestic US toy makers, whereever they may still be located.
