National Study Reveals American Idol Incorrectly Ranked Bottom Three Contestants

American Idol results show finally sends contestant Paige Miles home

Flemington, NJ, March 25, 2010 – A series of national studies conducted among 7,397 American Idol viewers revealed that the three contestants American Idol selected as receiving the lowest number of votes during the show last night did not accurately reflect the viewers’ choices.

The Idol Democracy study was conducted during March 23-24, by HCD Research using its mediacurves.com website, to obtain American Idol viewers’ perceptions of which contestant should be eliminated on the March 24 results show. HCD Research is conducting a series of studies among a nationally representative sample of Americans, which parallel American Idol voting to determine the weekly winners based on a democratic, “one person, one vote” methodology.

During last night’s show, Paige Miles was eliminated from the competition.  This was consistent with results reported by viewers participating in the national Idol Democracy study, which employs a “one person, one vote” system. However, while American Idol reported the other two contestants with the lowest votes were Katie Stevens and Tim Urban, the Idol Democracy study revealed that Aaron Kelly and Andrew Garcia should have been the second and third lowest ranked contestants.

The American Idol voting methodology allows viewers to vote multiple times for multiple contestants. However, the Idol Democracy study only allows viewers to vote one time for one contestant. To view detailed results visit: www.mediacurves.com/americanidol/idoldemocracy
