Food for Thought: Study Reveals Democrats are Better Tippers than Republicans and Independents

People of Jewish faith give better tips compared to people of other faiths

Flemington, NJ, April 26, 2010 – A new media study among 1,192 Americans revealed that on average, Democrats leave larger tips than Republicans and Independents when receiving good and bad service in restaurants.

The study was conducted during April 23-26 by HCD Research using its MediaCurves.com® website, to obtain information on Americans’ tipping habits when dinning in restaurants. To view detailed results go to: www.mediacurves.com.

When restaurant service is good, Democrats reported that they leave an average tip of 19.8% of the total bill while Republicans reported leaving 18.0% and Independents reported leaving 17.9% of the check. When restaurant service is bad, Democrats reported leaving an average tip of 10.8% of the total bill while Republicans left 8.7% and Independents left 8.4% of the check.

Among religious affiliation, Jewish people reported leaving an average tip of 20.8% of the total bill when service is good and 11.4% when service is bad. Christians reported leaving an average of 18.3% of the total bill when service is good and 9.0% when service is bad.  Respondents who reported having no religious affiliation were the second highest average tippers in restaurants when the service was good (20.1%) or bad (9.9%).

If the service is extremely bad I don't leave a tip. Because it's not deserved.

THE TIPPING PROCESS IS SO WRONG. I SHOULD NOT LEAVE A TIP ACCORDING TO WHAT I ORDER. I SHOULD LEAVE A TIP ACCORDING TO THE SERVICE I RECIEVE. SO IF I ORDER A $10 MEAL I SHOULD TIP $1.50 TO $2.00 BUT IF I ORDER SOMETHING THAT COST $40 IM SUPPOSED TO TIP $6 TO $7 FOR THE SAME SERVICE PROVIDED. ALL THEY DID WAS CARRY A PLATE. WHAT IS ON IT SHOULD NOT MATTER HOW I TIP.

I give a good tip for good service even though the service is slow (because of something in the kitchen not as a result of poor wait staff service.

I usually am not a big tipper. People put to much emphasis on tipping. Tipping should be done away with completely.

If service is bad due to the server, I tip poorly or not at all. If it's bad because of other staff, I will tip from 15 - 20% depending on the attitude and promptness of the server. If I'm in a large party or if the service is exceptional, then I'll tip 20%
