Viewers Will Tone Down Use of Tanning Beds After Watching News Clip

Tanning Law
Vast majority believe laws should restrict teens from using indoor tanning beds

Flemington, NJ, November 17, 2009 – A new media study among 332 viewers of a news clip regarding laws in Europe that prevent teenagers from using tanning beds revealed that the majority of viewers (64%) who currently use tanning beds will cut back  on indoor tanning after watching the video.

The study was conducted by HCD Research using its MediaCurves.com® website on November 16-17, to obtain viewers’ perceptions of a video clip highlighting the dangers of indoor tanning beds and potential laws to prevent the widespread use of tanning beds in Europe. To view interest curves and detailed results go to: www.mediacurves.com.

After seeing the video, an overwhelming majority of viewers (87%) reported that there should be laws that restrict teenagers under 18 from using tanning beds. In addition, the majority of viewers (81%) indicated that the U.S. government should prosecute stores that allow teenagers to use tanning beds.

Among the findings:

Wow, I used to tan in tanning beds and I had no idea how bad they were for me. No teen should be allowed to tan in a bed and parents should make sure they are protected from the sun.

I think the video was a tad overdone and somewhat not believable. Also, have we done studies in the US?

Totally different laws in US vs Europe. FDA has regulated tanning beds and lamps since the 1980s.Too bad they only give part of the story.

the video was interesting on the melanoma subject, i wish you they would have spent more time on identifying moles for the general public. but it will not keep teenagers out of the sun or tanning beds, how you look is just too important in this world

tanning beds may have a place in the high latitudes such as communities north of 60, but most of us get enough UV without needing to resort to a tanning bed. tanning booth users, like spray on tan users, have an odd tan to them that can be spotted right away. It's like a bad toupee.

My extremely jaded opinion is that this is just nature's way of weeding people out of the population. If you regulate tanning beds, people will just go outside. That may well be better for them to just go outside and see daylight.

As in anything that we do that is most likely harmful to ourselves... i.e. drinking alcohol, smoking... one should have to be an adult to make that decision. Teenagers, in most cases, are just not old enough to make such decisions. It is our job to look out for our youth. If you are an adult and want to put yourself at risk, it is your decision.

Talk about a slanted study-just another that lacks science. US has regulated sunbeds via the FDA since 1980 and many states as well--UK is much different and has a much higher % of unstaffed sunbeds. Why didn't the report explain the difference? Melanoma incidence and fatality rates in the US show 90% are over age 45 and the median age is 60--not teenagers. If you took the time to check, you would have found that the majority of salons in the US already have minimum age requirements--and without having a law to make it so. Why ask the question "should the government prosecute salons that allow teenage tanning" when it is not against the law? What was the demographic profile of those that took the study, including ages, sex and race? Nothing noteworthy here, just sensationalistic journalism. Here's a study for you: google search "the total amount of people that have died in a sunbed and publish the results!
