Americans Report Feeling Disturbed and Sad While Viewing Video on Child Beauty Pageants

Child Beauty Pagents
Majority (84%) say long-term effect on contestants is negative

Flemington, NJ, August 14, 2009 – A new national media study among 300 viewers of a video featuring the recent controversy surrounding child beauty pageants revealed that viewers reported that “disturbed” and “sad” were the emotions the felt most while watching the video.

The study was conducted by HCD Research using its MediaCurves.com® website on August 13, to obtain viewers’ perceptions of a video news clip highlighting the recent beauty pageant controversy.

“Viewers expressed strong levels of disagreement, until the video cited a study linking participation in child beauty pageants to eating disorders, depression and low self esteem, at which time levels of agreement rose dramatically,” noted Glenn Kessler, president and CEO, HCD Research.

The study also revealed that an overwhelming majority of viewers (80%) indicated that the beauty pageant experience was negative, and an even greater majority (84%) reported that the long-term effect on contestants was negative.

This kind of child exploitation is a travesty on our children. The women's protest groups like NOW should be all over these activities as severely demeaning and treating females as nothing but objects.

Hi Cilene,I think the script is alerady working: Using live HTTP headers I can see an event request being sent to Analytics; have you noticed a change in your bounce rate yet? You've probably got two plugins adding the GA code, or maybe it's been added to your theme, but I don't think it will actually cause you any problems if you really can't find out where it comes from. The bit about reverse engineering and sending personal information to Analytics was just in response to your question about whether Google allows you to modify their tracking code; you don't need to worry about that if you're using this script.Regards,Ewan

I think parents are living their dreams through their children. I only hope that parents can determine the difference between what they want and what their child wants. I don't think it is a very good idea for young children to act sexy or have their hair colored, teeth whitened, or other things like that.

This is not for the child but for the ego of the parents. This is a sick thing to do to a child. Their self worth is based on superficial looks and not on who they truely are. beauty fades then what do they have.

My own daughter has been involved in community theater from toddlerhood. I am not an actor and never would have considered this for her, if she hadn't been so very insistent that I find out how children got to be on tv and stages, because that's what she wanted to do. In our case the experience has been completely child-driven, and she has always been free to stop participating at any time--in fact I would be all for it! I got little sense that the children in the video--with the possible exception of the young Arkansas girl--wanted in themselves to be involved in beauty pageants. It seemed all parent-driven and therefore very wrong and potentially harmful to the child.

beuty pagents would be a "Great" hobby If the child was displayed as a child no makeup talents ok no fancy hairdos-just being themselves Otherwise it makes Most of them to greedy needy and stressed and bad for the child sex offenders and porno world-let a kid be a natural beauty. Its more for the parents not the child it discusts me.

I think its ridiculous to have small child competing to see who is the most beautiful and there is only one winner. How must the precious little children who do not win this title feel?

It appears that a lot of these parents are living vicariously through their children and the pageant promoters are making big money on entrance fees. Let the children decide when they are old enough to decide, ie 18 years old, or make it non-profit, no entrance fees, and no prizes. If it's merely 'playing dress-up' then why spend $70k a year on the perception of perfection? Kids play dress up in their mom's or dad's oversized clothes, not in $3000 gowns

I just wrote something about this today.
Apparently it's acceptable in the United States to dress toddlers up like full grown women and parade them on a stage in their swimsuits so they can be rated on their body, face and outfit by a panel of judges. This is not only a waste of time but it's totally twisted. I sure these pageants are swarming with dirty old men too.

I did pageants growing up and it is a opportunity for children to make friends come out of the shell and earn money for scholarships so I don't see anything wrong with it.
