Rating Apologies

There have been a number of famous apologies from luminaries which have captured America's attention. Having tested many of the most reported apologies of the last few years I have graded the some of the common elements used to appeal to the masses for forgiveness,.

Bible and God: Paris Hilton, Michael Vick and some of the great televangelists of our time have used their religion in their appeals for forgiveness. Some of these relate to purporting finding faith in God (Michael Vick)...where others like Paris Hilton simply report reading The Bible while incarcerated.

If your base of voters or fans tend to be religious you have a shot. Many people are pre disposed to forgiveness... but don't be a Paris Hilton. When Larry King asks you your favorite bible passage...make something up!

Grade: C

Family: Of course public apologies to families for poor behavior are useful...the images of spouses and children standing by the emotional perpetrator are powerful. This is a useful ploy.

Grade: B

Voters and Fans: Asking forgiveness from your constituents for moral aberrations is expected and generally a failure. In cases of infidelities voters tend to respond negatively when apologies are directed to people unknown to the apologizer.

When the apologizer has built a career on positioning him/herself on religious or family values, this contradiction fails.

Grade: D

Staff: Apologizing for disappointing or misleading staff doesn't work. Many people feel that the staff of a powerful person is complicit in the transgressions leading to the apology.

Grade: D-

I didn't Inhale: Forget it
